Pheromone specificity:Pheromone Resources

 Pheromone specificity?
Wyatt (2010) modified the definition after Karlson and Luscher (1959) which is “Molecules that are evolved signals, in defined ratios in the case of multiple component pheromones, which are emitted by an individual and received by a second individual of the same species, in which they cause a specific reaction, for example a stereotype behavior or a developmental process”.

Here released by specific individual is Ok, but which they cause a specific reaction ..up to this Ok ...received by the second individual of the same species..is not always the same case. There are exceptions, which may in due course of investigations, may prove as given below to a wider species.

Pheromone specificity?
Usually it is said that pheromones are species specific, but actually it is not so for all the species.

There are many  exceptions.
1.      Cis-8-Dodecenyl acetate attract 40 insect species (Kydonieus and Beroza, 1982)
2.      Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) sex pheromone ((Z)-7-dodecen-I-ylacetate, the same chemical is used by 140 species of  lepidopteran moths (Rasmussen et al.,1997).

v  Z9-14Ac  -  Tamaki et al.(1976)-Spodoptera litura
(Z)-9-Tetradecenyl acetate
Formula:C16H30O2

318 other  species use this chemical for communication   (Refer: Pherobase)

v    Is amyl Acetate- Shares two order 1) Hymenoptera—Aphis mellifera
2) Lepidoptera—Manduca sexta
v     Cis-14-methyle.8.hexadecenal- is shared by  many Trogoderma species
v     Cis-9, trans-12-Tetra Decadienyl acetate- Shares two different genus
1) Pyralidae—Plodia interpunctella
2) Noctuidae--Spodoptera litura

Under this situation, is it opt to define …..that influences the physiology or behavior of other animals of the same species….

Pheromone chemical could attract or cause physiological or behavioral changes to about 40 different species and  among the species belonging to  different orders, hence, Can we define like this:

“Info-chemicals excreted outside eliciting reactions either physiological or behavioral  on the receiving organism which may either be the same or different species of organism”.
